> Findings from a participatory arts training project with staff working with women across the criminal justice system. Women/Theatre/Justice

> A UK Research and Innovation-funded study of Clean Break Theatre’s practice led to development of unique participatory arts workshops with practitioners across the criminal justice system: police, prison and probation officers, third sector organisation workers, magistrates and crown court judges.

> The workshops engaged staff in reflective dialogue through a consideration of the film Sweatbox (by Chloë Moss, commissioned by Clean Break), original artworks from Laura Dean’s un:mute series, and applied theatre exercises. These prompted open questions about the lives of criminalised women, the systems that process them, and the daily work of the people employed within those systems. Each workshop was facilitated by a Clean Break staff member and a Clean Break Member artist with lived experience of the criminal justice system.

‍There have been many reports on women and the criminal justice system. This project is the first that hears from people in all occupations operating the system from beginning to end and we will hear from participants on the night. The findings are truly surprising and offer practical ways forward for compassionate justice.

3 times a year, through exhibition, we curate and celebrate the artwork and shared connections between the people that create our public art classes. my interest in relational and socially engaged art led me to deliver these art classes alongside my own art practice and university teaching. Our classes have grown from 14 to 80 people over the years, most of whom return for each course.
we walk with each other through all sorts of challenges - students have called our collective space an ‘art family’ a ‘safe space’ a ‘home from home’.

My studio practice runs from the Meter Room, a city-based arts collective and project space showing nationally and internationally recognised work in an environment that promotes experimental practice. However, having run for 14 years, due to a property development company Meter Room has sadly now closed. This was our final collective exhibition as studio holders.
